I have over 25+ plus years of experience using LOTO. Management must ensure the safety of personnel working on
industrial equipment and protect the equipment from damage/misuse. Over the past couple of years as a Johnson
Controls employee I have worked with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) management to install a LOTO program at the Upper
Merion site in Pennsylvania.
After attempting to install a system with in house resources it became apparent this would not be possible. There
were other priorities that seemed more important than creating a LOTO system. At that point I suggested moving in
a new direction. GSK, through my research, contacted ESC Services, Inc for a demonstration and price.
ESC Services was granted the contract to develop a LOTO program at Upper Merion. To date the company has
completed over 800 equipment specific LOTO procedures. I have found the gentlemen representing ESC to be
professional, knowledgeable, and attentive to detail. ESC personnel conducted a building by building walk down to
collect the required detail. This was to ensure the LOTO for that equipment would be correct. ESC conducted
training to inform GSK maintenance personnel about the OSHA regulations and how to use the LOTO system
instituted.
ESC personnel reviewed the LOTO procedures created with knowledgeable GSK maintenance personnel to ensure
their accuracy. ESC personnel also addressed any changes to the procedure as requested by GSK maintenance.
The service offered by this company has been invaluable. There is no way this task could have been completed as
quickly with in house personnel. As the process moves forward GSK will be in compliance with OSHA LOTO
regulations, ensuring the safety of its personnel and protecting equipment from misuse or damage.
I would suggest to any industrial company investigating a new LOTO process to look into using ESC Services
because their product is OSHA compliant, easy to read, and they will assist in future annual reviews and updates.
In addition, ESC provides an electronic back up and a disc with templates for creating new procedures as new
equipment is installed or modified.
